I just recently had an experience like this. I got a call that I owed a Qwest bill from 2002. The woman was rude and when I told her that I did not owe anything and that I presently have Qwest service and they say I do not owe them anything from 2002, she told me that they probably didn't know I owed it! I informed her that I knew I didn't owe that money and she must be dreaming if she thought I was going to pay it anyway and I hung up. To the collection agency's credit, about a week later, I did receive a letter stating that after they "investigated the matter" it was determined that I did not, in fact, owe that bill. What a crock! I wonder how many people get these calls and panic and pay things they do not owe?
