A new book argues that A/C gobbles energy and makes us more isolated.

I am sure this guy wastes plenty of electricity powering his computer, TVs, fridge, microwave, etc, etc. AC is a lifesaver. Literally, thousands of people die in the south during heatwaves.

he's basically just suggesting that we cut back, not saying to ban AC. I'm sure he wouldn't advocate that people not use AC during heat waves. Why do people like you always have to go on the attack? Can't you just consider his message and than apply whatever part you feel comfortable with? BTW, I have noticed our electrical bill is a lot higher this summer even though we have a newer and smaller house that should be pretty efficient. We leave our AC on, but program it higher when we are gone during the day. I may consider turning it even higher and opening a window too for more fresh air.

Really? If you don't like AC don't use it. Case closed.

I live in America where I can waste as much electricity as my pocket book will allow. Put your stat at 80f, their is a reason muder rates rise during hot weather.

Whether people use their a/c or not is their business, but Al Gore *did* win the presidency, this much is a fact!

to be a liberal. Everything will kill us. Everything is dire. You can't have fun because it hurts the environment. I wish they would all kill themselves so the rest of us can just live our lives.

I find it ironic that this person mentions both Al Gore and energy usage. The same "green" Al Gore who was found to use 10x more energy in his home than the average similarly-sized home. Yeah.

far outweighs the energy it consumes. Anyone whose wish is for a 'simpler time' is certainly free to take the necessary steps to achieve that for themselves. The problems come when people read propaganda such as this drivel and begin to actually believe that all creature comforts due to technology will have cataclysmic consequences. We are seeing the results of this with the 'Green' religion which is welcoming thousands of new members into the congregation daily. A budding new wanna-be theocracy that tries to pass itself off as being based in science. Like many religious zealots, they feel their way is the only righteous way and, by God, it oughtta be law.

The only legitimate point this guy is making--that we should try to be as efficient as possible with our energy use--needs little emphasis, since there is already a financial incentive to use energy as efficiently as possible, because energy costs us money. I find it especially noteworthy that he doesn't like air conditioning because A/C has allowed the country's center of electoral gravity to move South, which makes the country lean more Republican. That's something a Democrat might lament, but something a Republican might celebrate. It has nothing to do with energy efficiency or reconnecting with our neighbors; it's just his partisan politics.

All these people moved to the South and the West and voted Republican just because of the state they moved to? They wouldn't have voted that way if they had stayed in the Northeast and Midwest? That logic is ridiculous.
