Excellent self - assessment questions, Matt. Here are 2 more things I encourage people to do: 1. Talk to people in the field that you are considering moving in to. Ask them: • What do they like about their job? • What would they like to change about their job? (This is a positive way of asking what they do not like about their job/career or chosen field.) • How did they get into the field? • What changes do they foresee occurring in this industry/field? • What skills/attributes make one successful in this field? • What advice do they have for someone who wants to break in to this field? • What question should I have asked that I did not ask? (Or… What else do I need to know?) 2. Job shadow. Find someone who does the work that you want to do and see if you can follow them around for a day. This is probably the best investment someone who is seeking a career change can make. If you are still excited about this field after following someone around for a day THEN it may be appropriate to invest time, energy and money into retraining.
