is that the "watchdog" role was abandoned long ago and what's left, for the most part, is infotainment. They can only accommodate the sound bite and will pick the most sensationalist one available. In some cases (FOX "news"), they just make it up as they go along, making sure it fits their own narrative.

out there is Glenn Beck.. the rest of the media has their head so far up their backsides it's ridiculous... for those of you that hate him and have never watched him.. please take time, one week..just one week and decide... he is the only person who digs into stories and backs it up with FACTS not emotions..although he's emotional.. I'll call it passoniate.. the local news is just that and newspapers like this are really a waste of time...

Who is he and why are we arguing about him?

Glenn Beck is the top political cynic and drama queen of Fox News. He gets on and cries about how his America is melting away under the alleged socialism of our current president. He's assigned himself the main anti-government conspiracy theorist, and contributes the most to the American cynicism that this column is discussing.

whether they be in the press, government, or the private sector. Mr. Bell need not apply.

I am serious. I watch little tv and find no reason to pay hundreds of dollars for satellite. I have never seen or heard of him. Maybe we'd all be better off if we killed our tv's and got back to real life.

While I agree with the general tenor of Mr. Bell's statements (What is there really to disagree with?) I don't believe in preaching evolution to creationists, or arguing rationally with conspiratorialists. Its an exhausting and futile exercise. Civic-minded people need to join together and advocate for the laws and the policies they wish to see in government. We are in the midst of a cultural fight, this ain't no "tea party". Democrats waste too much energy on the defensive. Palin, Bachman, Beck and their ilk are on the losing side of history, nativist ranters, trying to bring back an America that never was. They claim to be the "real American's". Baloney. When you confront a bully, don't swing back, just look him/her straight in the eye and speak your truth. Ultimatley, we'll get the government we deserve. I hope we make good choices.
