Eight months after Shane Bauer went hiking with two friends in Iraq, two mothers spend their days in Minnesota pressing for the captives' release from an Iranian prison.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. I believe the Iranians.

Unless you are in the military or are willing to accept the risk that comes with this. Yes,in a perfect world you would have the right to do this, but until then use common sense. This also goes for people doing stupid things like climbing dangerous mountains in bad weather conditions. You are putting rescuers in danger with your actions.

This is a tough one. They don't have "a hook". Not to mention they are the "wrong" color/ethnic background. Perhaps worst of all, No friends in high places. It is just tough to feel sympathy. Again hope it works out.........

As much as I sympathize, it's hard to imagine that we're getting the whole story. Nobody would be so naive to go hiking in a place like that, would they?

I am sure it is miserable being locked up, especially in Iran! I can only imagine...and it is not good. But they are Americans and they were being awfully stupid, if not cocky, to go hiking around the border of Iran. We have people in our prisons who have families who claim they are being wrongfully held...well, anyone play chess?

These hikers should have known better. I think they did. And they are busted. Eventually the right diplomatic set up will come around and they will come home. Good. Then let's be quiet about this. They are not victims or heroes. At best they made a stupid mistake.

I wouldn't mind "taking care of business" on Iranian soil.

You pay your money, you take your choice. If they aren't actual spies, I bet they had some hare-brained scheme to find Osama Bin Laden and collect the 25 million dollar reward. Stupid is as stupid does.

no posters made awful, insensitive comments about these hikers "getting what they deserved." Finally some sensitivity in reader's posts. Thank you!

They say they are hikers, mom says they are hikers, the media says they are hikers, so that must make them hikers. I don't believe none of it. Who could be that stupid, especially after being educated at Berkley?
