Jim Souhan: Is it time for Twins to ponder the unthinkable?

  • Article by: JIM SOUHAN , Star Tribune

If negotiations on a new deal continue to lag, the Twins might be forced to consider trading the hometown hero rather than risk losing him as a free agent.

Leave it to Souhan to stir up trouble where there isn't any. This article is based on such a ridiculous premise that I don't feel the need to elaborate any further. Jimmy said it himself when he wrote that a deal is still more likely than not. If that's the case, then what's the point of writing this pot-stirring article? C'mon, Jim...there's plenty of other stuff regarding baseball to talk about without making up controversies.

If they don't then they will prove what many have known for years...They will do what they can to never pay a player to keep him in the franchise until he retires....They have the opportunity to sign him for good.....Why trade him?? The Twins have shown they will never get anything worth trading for....

first the over dramatizing of Nathan getting hurt, now trading Mauer? Jim, you KNOW that aint gonna happen. I think Jim is trying to be provocative in his columns to get more hits.

The Twins should consider how well it worked for the T-Wolves breaking the bank on one player. Love KG, but was he worth it?

RobK68....you've got to be kidding. They have traded marquee players and built winners around the results. Do the names Frank Viola and AJ Pierzynski ring any bells? Seriously. Yes, Santana had us over a barrel and nobody would bite, but this is very different. If it's forced on the Twins, it could solve the Nathan problem or stock the club for the next 5 years. Get a clue.

YEAH! Only an idiot would think that a franchise wouldn't be able to sign the best pitcher in baseball and a 2 time Cy Young winner cause he wanted to play in New York...wait, what?

I agree with Souhan...The onus is fully on Baby Jesus......Its time for him to step up and sign or be straight and tell management he's not going to at any price.....

but its the environment that exists. If you are going to play in it, you have to play by the rules. Given what other stars have signed for, $25 mill for Mauer is not out of line - in a real world yes, but compared to baseball, no. This is what the Pohlads will have to shell out, and this is what they will do. They have no choice. And while I think the Twins did pretty good in building the team in the off season, they did not excel. They needed another solid starter and/or a 3b man. If I was Mauer, I would not be that impressed.

Given how many time Minnesota teams have been screwed in the past by trying to hang on to top notch players only to lose them for nothing when they "test" the free agent market, it's reasonable and responsible to consider all angles. Yeah, it would be great to keep him, but if he-and his sleaze bag agent who makes his millions of others' talents-aren't going to sign, then dump him for whatever you can get.
