I live in Mr. Oberstar's district and quite honestly will find it troubling if the Democrates pass this with a simple majority. We are a Republic not a Democracy. There is a big difference that few appreciate (http://www.lexrex.com/enlightened/AmericanIdeal/aspects/demrep.html). Any social issue of the past whether it be Social Security, or Medi-Care had bipartisan support. This bill does not. They should start over. I have lost trust in anything that is stated by the current administration. They lie at will.

Sorry stlane, our system of government is based on majority rule. The filibuster is simply a Senate rule, it has been change a few times throughout history. In my opinion it is currently being abused and need to be changed. Make those Senators talk if they want to filibuster. Right now they take a cloture vote and if there aren't 60 in favor the bill doesn't come to the floor. None of the Senators has to be inconvenienced by having to actually debate. There should be a price to pay for holding up the system and blocking majority rule.

Obama was elected by a healthy majority to make some pretty major changes. Reconciliation has been used by both parties (the Bush tax cuts, the R in COBRA stands for reconciliation). Most major moves forward in this country happened with the Democrats ion board and the Republicans saying "no", from civil rights to the New Deal. If you don't like it, then work to elect more regressive thugs next time. The lying is being done by Republicans, and they do it shamelessly and rampantly with the medai enabling them the whole way by not soing their jobs as journalists.

Did you know that Martin Luther King was a Republican. That Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. Also, do either of you realize that we live in a Republic not a Democracy. Obama promised a unifying leadership. I am sure a 51 vote senate will go along way towards that end. Also, just listening to the news, does the senate bill include abortion. Some Democrats say no others say yes. Exactly what is the truth. America is all about protecting the rights of the minority not the majority. Again please check your facts on the difference between a Republic and a Democracy.

The politics around this single issue is wrecking our country. If the two sides want to kill each other, let them have at it. But they shouldn't be allowed to mess up the progress the rest of us are trying to make.

The issue around abortion for some is a question of women's rights. I can understand that. To other's it is the taking of a human life. Can you understand that. What are the consequences if one of these views are wrong ? Think about it.

Oberstar is a left wing nutjob. He'll toe the Democrat party line because that's what all good Democrats do when told to do so. We will see whether there are any principled Democrats left. We will see if any Democrats will put principles before party. I'm not holding my breath.
