Assuming Maurer would be married and filing a joint tax return, assuming that current tax rates stayed as they are, and also assuming Mauer had no other income in the year(s) he received deferred income, he would save about $30,000 a year. Currently the highest tax bracket is 35%, which kicks in at $372,950. The difference on a joint return between what the tax is for that amount - $100,895 - and 35% of $372,950 is about $30,000. For a single tax payer the difference would be about $22,500 per year. If he had other taxable income, the difference would be less.

Sid, a tax expert you are not. If you were, you would take into account the State of New York charges on those earning money in their state.

to stir the pot. Why doesn't he want Joe to stay? Probably because of his close personal friendship to Steinbrenner

Sid stirring the pot? Try Mark Rosen. Wasn't this supposed to be a done deal two weeks according to him?

to Atlanta for Jurrgens, T. Hanson, and B. McCann or to Boston for Lester, Lowell, Ellsbury. Maybe, just pay him a lot of money...or maybe not. I just don't know what they should do???

Because Joe is Florida resident, he will not be playing in any other state when he's retired, hence he would be paying zero state income tax on his deferments.

We build these millionaires a new playground with our taxes and they can't even pay their own share? Joe is a Florida resident and has no intention of paying a penny towards that stadium, out of his millions.

If you recall, Kirby Puckett and his agent Ron Shapiro agreed with the Twins to a 5 year $27 million deal in May of 1992 but Carl Pohlad WAIVED that. It was a complete MIRACLE that Kirby still signed once he became a free agent considering how it was SO important to Pohlad that Kirby remain a Twin.......
