Mpls.-to-Duluth rail price tag climbs to $1 billion

The proposed Northern Lights Express from Minneapolis to Duluth runs into complications after a MnDOT "worst-case" estimate comes in much higher than a more conservative estimate by rail supporters.

"Trains were often late, public subsidies were draining and ridership was falling." I guess $1 Billion isn't a public subsidy?

NLX doesn't make it any more viable than it is now. Northstar track already goes right past the huge parking complex that is already built. Why not stop the train there now?

I remember riding the train from "the cities" to Duluth when I was kid. I also remember the route being discontinued due to lack of riders. It's amazing how some people don't learn from history.

What a massive waste of money if they go ahead with the MSP-Duluth line. Dems have no problem wasting money on crazy ideas like this.

How much less would it cost to hire a personal driver for everyone that would ride this? A lot less I'm guessing.

I'm not pro-stadium but I would say 1,000 times more people would benefit from a new Vikings stadium paid for with the $1 billion than from this train line.

The Vikes already have a stadium. If they don't like it, we've paid for two brand new stadiums they can use, one of which was intended for football. They can move into one of those.
