A family's flight to Minnesota to avoid gang violence in El Salvador has the attention of the U.S. Supreme Court and is poised to set precedent in immigration law.

They will not affect anyone here or hurt anyone. Let them stay.

Pablo, Rene and Silvia Mira left El Salvador in 2004, illegally crossing the border to live with their mother in Minnesota. See the word "illegally"? That is the fulcrum on which this argument is balanced. Just because they claim persecution does not mean that our laws are thrown asunder. Sorry, you can't steal your neighbor's car because your sister needed baby food at the store...

Deport them. They are welcome back if they play by the rules.

It looks to me that you have 3 young people who graduated H.S. want to obtain degrees and join the work force. A forced return to El Salvador means the choice of joining a dangerous and violent gang or death. The people who act like life is sacred I guess that life is only sacred if your white.

Add this to the ever-increasing list of nebulous claims illegals use to try to game the system here. Aided by left-wing immigration lawyers and advocacy groups, illegals are always trying to come up with new ways to expand the normal definition of 'asylum'. If they had the money and resoucefulness to come all the way here to enter the US illegally, they should have found a way to move to another city in El Salvador where they would not allegedly be hassled by gangs. The whole thing smacks of a made up excuse to stay here. There is no proof of this other than their claims. They should have filed for asylum and done it the legal way. I hope the court does not fall for this, and further expand the long list of bogus reasons to be granted asylum here.

Nobody should live in fear. But we have our own gang problems here in the US as well, and I don't see funds for people to move to another location if their neighborhood is crime ridden. So why should the laws and policies be curbed for 3 people that aren't even citizens paid for by our tax dollars? I agree with another commenter on this...why didn't they escape to another country nearby if the threat of death was intense? Why come all the way here? Obviously there's more to their reasons than they gave.

it's pretty hard to prove that your life is in immediate danger or that you're persecuted to get asylum. people are denied all the time and everyday crime is not a valid reason to come here illegal. i all but guarantee they deport them because this is like saying "i can't let my kids go out because there may be child molesters out there". sounds pretty ridiculous to reason moving to another country right? especially when the very thing they claim to be avoiding is right here. even if you feel sorry for them you have to admit it's a pretty lame excuse because then we'd have to take everyone in their country if they said the same thing.

Perhaps we should resurrect the idea of indentured servanthood. Stay in the US and work for seven years and afterwards, instead of being given land, you're awarded citizenship.
