Let's hope when they replace the ash trees they include a wide variety of replacements. How shortsighted to replace the dutch elm issue with a similar ash borer issue 40 years later.

It's a worthy cause, but we don't even have enough money to keep humans healthy, let alone trees.

"Update the city's diseased tree ordinance so that city workers would have the authority to go onto private property for inspection, order the removal of diseased trees and take them down if owners don't comply with the order." Last time I checked it's private property. If I say no I mean no. Do you think they'll let me go on privet state property? NO... Order? I am not in the military anymore more, what is wrong with asking? Is the city going to help offset the cost? Doubtful...

Ashland Avenue in Saint Paul must be wondering about the future of their trees. Those of us a block south on Portland saw our elms come down three decades or so ago and a prairie appear. I hope our sugar maples live a long life.

You say that's fine because it is on you're private property, and you shouldn't be forced to do anything about it if you don't want to. That's fine, but then you should be liable for the damage your tree causes as breeding ground for the ash borer. You can certainly do what you want, just make sure your are going to take personal responsibility for the damage your decision causes.

taking a piece of ash on a case by case basis even though doing that might not be as interesting as the piece by piece approach.
