Actually, it's probably less serious than the regular flu. Regular flu kills 35,000 people per year. This virus hasn't killed anywhere near that number of people. (ST Editor's note: ...yet.)

curious that it seems to hit young people/schools more frequently here in the US.

is when it kills a "significant" percentage of otherwise healthy people. The "regular" flu tends to cause hospitalization or death in already vulnerable individuals. Of course, what "significant" means is open to interpretation. It remains to be seen if the death rate in Mexico is real or skewed in some way. Last I read, that was still a mystery. Luckily, the rest of the world hasn't seen that death rate so far.

...and what do you need to do to get a snow day up here? Many major cities across the U.S. shut down simply due to rain.

I'm sure they can probably find 2 students at SWHS who have herpes, 2 who are pregnant, and 2 who have dry skin also. Thumbs up to SWHS for treating this hyped up bug for what it is - a mild case of the flu. Thumbs down to the Strib for continuing to cover this story as if it were the Eboli virus and spreading unnecessary fear and panic.

How long are you sick with the regular flu? My guess would be 3 to 5 days. How long are you sick with H1N1 swine flu? It is 10 to 14 days. Have any of you listened to those that have had it describe how sick they are? They can't lift their head off the pillow. Every joint is screaming in pain. Their throats are extremly sore. One 17 year old girl in N.Y. said she was so sick, she couldn't even text. That's darn sick. Even though it has not killed thousands like you were expecting, it is still a hard core illness. Quit acting like it's the regular 3 to 5 day flu, because it is not. What would happen in your life if you were that sick for that long?

I thought that the WHO re-named this novel influenza strain to avoid confusion regarding transmission from swine. Strib should try to keep up.

you would think that a school would take extra measures to prevent a worst case scenario, especially when kids and their families are involved. Why keep the school open when two probable cases have been found? Hmmm...no wonder Mpls Schools don't have a very good reputation.

I really never thought I'd be sending an email to a major daily newspaper to say that "alot" is NOT a word. As in, "getting alot of calls" WOW!!! Maybe you should start hiring some of your good editors back?
