He was a professor of mine at Southwest State University. I took several Literature and Poetry classes. He was a wonderful, odd fellow. He loved to read poetry, play the piano and all manner of unusual musical instruments, sing, drink, eat and live. He loved cold desolate places, and the vigorous life those who live in such places throw up in joyous defiance. We're all a bit poorer (and quieter) without you, Mr. Holm.

For the written word, in all its power and beauty.

My wife is from Minneota, MN. He obviously must have met her. "stirred to the bottom of his soul by what he feels is evil"

His stories of growing up in small town Minneota, MN were so lovely and poetic and skillful. I have always looked forward to the next Bill Holm book. What a loss.

Bill Holm was one of a kind. I had the privilege of being his co-worker at SMSU for awhile and I never stopped finding Bill utterly marvelous. He is gone too soon from this world! Wherever you are now, Bill, keep stirring things up. :-)

This is a sad day for literature and for Minnesota and Iceland, too. His voice will be sorely missed.

I heard Mr. Holm once. He gave a UofM graduation commencement in 2000. He had a presence that none of those graduates were ready to hear. I believe he gave them more education than they'd received in the past 2 years- or more. A wise man. I've kept telling myself to buy one of his works...finally, sadly, now I will.

As a former reporter, I adored Bill Holm. His optimism and wit were balms to my soul. His talk about turning off the TV and turning on to life always motivated me, at least for a day or two. I feel like a bright light has been dimmed from this world. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

A true loss to the literature community. He was wonderful to listen to and his essays and poems were the best. He will be missed.
