decrease in petro demand has gotten us these new, lower prices... why stop now? After years of incredible tax subsidies for gas hogs and a neanderthol mentality that driving a licensed tank was pro-American (Doh!) we need to 100% eliminate tax subsidies for inefficient vehicles, start offering tax credits for high-mileage American made vehicles, higher CAFE standards, a floor price for petroleum, and a per gallon energy replacement fee, that will be dedicated towards these high-efficiency tax credits, home insulation, and other methods that DIRECTLY decrease consumption. The fallacious B.S. and big-money advertising of the A.P.I. (American Petroleum Institute) and it's other fossil fuel liars cannot change the facts. This recession gives us a chance to really change our future for the better and an America that prospers is an America without a vehicle under 25mpg.

Get your laws out of my tank!!! If Ethanol was so good there would be no need to mandate it.Repeal the law and let us see if Ethanol could stand on it's own.

When I moved away from Minnesota last year, my MPG increased by almost 3 in my truck because we don't use ethanol out here. That gets me almost 65 more miles out of my tank. Ethanol is just a fancy farm subsidy. It's time to do away with it.

Unless you are talking about transportation fuels as a whole system (fuel AND vehicles) one should refrain from spurting information that ends up being small minded. The bottom line on ethanol is-it does not belong in gasoline. Remember where you heard this first-Ethanol does not blend with gasoline because it does not follow the Clausius-Clapeyron behavior-it does not operate in the vehicle like gasoline does. Ethanol raises RVP, lowers T50 but not the ASTM Drivability Index-all are not good factors for the vehicle, enviroment or consumer. Maybe these expert reports should include facts about how ethanol blended gasoline increases ground level ozone pollution, better known as smog, which has been described by health experts as sunburn of the lungs. This is due to ethanol gasoline vapor permeation in the fuel system-the vapors leak out of the fuel system causing increased smog. I think Americans choking and dying on this effluent is a much bigger concern than pie-in-the-sky greenhouse gas emissions. Once again, if you are talking about gasoline without mentioning vehicle needs, you are just spewing waste matter. Check out www.fuelguru.com for the latest on transportation fuels.

Not only does the 10% blend in Minnesota reduce mileage, but at current prices for 87 octane gasoline and the E85 price differential, it makes no sense to purchase E85 for your FlexFuel Vehicle. Saab is reportely developing a car with a new engine to burn E85 more efficiently but it requires a compression ratio of 15:1 like a diesel or race car engine...then it can burn regular gas....OK then try driving it outside of MN where there is no E85 pumps. I have tried using E85 many different times and under different conditions in my FFV vehicle, and everytime I do, it is very disappointing wiht loss of power and mileage. The energy required to produce ethanol is also taking away that natural gas from heating our homes. It also requires 4 gallons of water to make 1 gallon of Ethanol, which is lower the water table in area around ethanol production plants. New plants are more efficient??? Maybe with switch grass....Close all those corn Ethanol production plants down and save our water, corn, tax dollars and sanity.

Doesn't work.

If Ethanol is so efficient, why subsidize it ? For that matter, if it's such a great fuel, why mandate it ? No studies about processing our dumps for hydrocarbons - too bad, because that has some real potential (see 2002 Discover magazine - "the reason it's not being promoted is that the government dosen't know who will profit from it"...)

A study financed by Great Plains Institute, which is pushing the 'green' stuff and biofuels. Of course the study will produce the results the financer wants.

I use as much as I can get my hands on! My vehicles run terrific on ethanol. It actually cleans the engine of all the deposits left by regular gasoline. I read about all these know it all posters here on the tribune who love to blast ethanol but are clueless! They would rather back the Arabs and foreign oil than help the farm industry. That makes a lot of sense doesn't it? I support the farmers, we need to keep them viable. Unless you want them all to go broke and have corporate farms controlling the flow of all Corn/ Soybeans. Then what do you people think you are going to pay for your Wheaties? U of M has lost all respect. Univ of Nebraska actually studies the facts before submitting an article. They must have a much more intelligent staff apparently!

The anti-ethanol attack dogs are thick in here today. Amazing how their use of search engines to find these stories and then comes the flood of negative comments. Also amazing is the fact that of the businesses that attacked ethanol over the past year through the use of the media and attack dogs such as these are the ones seeing record profits, divert attention away from what they are doing to the American public which is bend over please! Oh and talk about subsidies, big oil gets subsidies and record profits, their laughing all the way to the bank on the back of the tax payers of this country. The food giants are also laughing at us all, prices are still high in the grocery store but their input costs have dropped tremendously. Look it up if you don't believe me, you can find out who have made record profits, those stories go by so fast in the media and not much is said about it, why ?
