As a two-time volunteer with Peace Corps in Brazil and India decades ago, I can attest to its usefulness in promoting understanding around the world. The Peace Corps budget back in the early 1970s was around seventy million dollars and there was a threat then of its demise but it survived. It will survive the present-day crisis as well.

When I was accepted into the Peace Corps I was given a wonderful opportunity to share my skills and abilities with others. I served in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania in West Africa and in some cases worked with people who knew Americans by deed only. When 9/11 happened, I was surrounded by Mauritanian friends and host families that mourned with the US. The things that they taught me I have brought back home and have tried to put to work though volunteering. I firmly believe that the benefits to this Peace Corps outweigh the costs.

It amazes me that we, the American people, are willing to spend over 400 million dollars a day on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. My Peace Corps experience (Senegal, 2003-2005) tells me that personal friendships and working together can have a big positive impact.
