CARGILL’S SOUTHEAST ASIAN OIL-PALM PLANTATIONS

Cargill acquired its first plantation in 1995 on the Indonesian island of Sumatra and expanded three years ago with the purchase of three plantations in Papua New Guinea and one more in Indonesia. Cargill is one of many companies farming the oil palm in Asia. Southeast Asia produces more than 80 percent of the world’s oil palm fruit. About half of the oil palm plantations are established on land that had once been a rainforest.
