During the cool, damp spring here, monarchs were the one variety that seemed to be around in Des Moines. At the moment, they're right up there with the tiger swallowtails that have emerged in the last two weeks. Perhaps the monarchs only made it so far north because of the strange spring. The monarchs are pertty hardy; a couple of years ago I seem to recall that there were unusual weather conditions that harmed the colony that over-wintered in Mexico, yet the next summer there seemed to be just as many as before. Hope that's the case for the upper Midwest, too.

The monarch count has flagged down here 'round Rochester too. But the firefly population has been resurgent. Earlier this season, there were so many fireflies that sunset was something of a wonderland. There's still bunches of 'em, but nothing like earlier.

I went on a count just yesterday morning northwest of Mitchell Lake (Big Lake's other lake) on the bike/walking paths through swamplands there, lots of milkweed but only one caterpillar spotted. Numbers are definitely down this year. Grey Tree Frogs, on the other hand, abound. Must have seen at least 2 or 3 dozen.

I read two or three years ago that at least one reason for the drop in the population of Monarch butterflies is that genetically modified corn lacks an enzyme they cannot do without. From the article and the comments, the reduction in population may be the result of a combination of causes.
