NTSB says corroded 35W gusset plate fractured

NTSB analysis shows the gusset plate fractured because of corrosion and mistaken design, not the force of the 35W bridge collapse.

It's my understanding that most of the lawyers working on this are doing so pro bono. They are giving of their knowledge and expertise to do what they do best . . . and perhaps contribute to greater safety in the future, who knows.

Was the Bridge deck extended to make the bridge wider? Were the Gusset Plates re-evaluated at that point? Was the size of the gusset plates on 8/1/2007 thick enough for the original design in 1965?

Lawyers are supposed to help find the truth and use it for justice. Most of the lawyers working on this are doing so pro bono, was my understanding.

How many more bridges would be falling if engineers and contractors and state officials weren't concerned about lawsuits? What if there were no consequence?

I'm glad that the story now supports negligence. It's a much less frightening picture than the possibility that a poorly designed structure could sit like a sleeping giant for 50 years, sailing through re-inspections and then suddenly fail. Republicans are understandably bummed because it happened on their watch. But really, guys, wouldn't you rather know that such a thing could have been prevented?
