Good for the plant employees! I worked at TCAP for 4 years as an engineer. The staff was the best in the business. Despite their hardship and uncertainty, it was a total pleasure to work with them.
Too bad the corporate guys sold the hydro plant. It made TCAP that much more desirable and profitable back in the day.
one of their most awarded and productive facilities for years, even though it's a very old plant. center of the country, well-positioned to get parts, good stable community. great workforce. plenty of land for expansion or refit to the side and back. hey, Ford, this would be a great place to build little cars again.
Turn the site into a park.
To update the drivetrain and grab some of Toyota's ugly Tacoma market share. I had the 4 liter OHC V6 / 2WD in my Ranger. loved it but my brother got better mileage with a V8 4WD F150. Good luck with the update. If it happpens the joint runs beyond 2 years.
It's great for plant workers; but as a Ford investor, I would be disappointed. Unless Ford's plan is to build something else there, there is no way this plant should continue to operate if they only build the Ford Ranger...ugly and poor reliability.
Put a good fuel efficient engine in the Ranger and the plant would never close. Who wouldn't want a 4wd small pickup that gets over 30 mpg in Minnesota? Make it safe and affordable with the new engine and maybe even a tax rebate from the state of Minnesota if it can achieve high MPG and emission standards.
While this is great news for the Ford employees over the next couple of years, I hope Ford has the foresight to look for continued opportunities to upgarde and keep the plant running producing more efficient vehicles.
Also, I certainly hope Roger Terveen (UAW 879 President) is not naive, or belive we are naive enough to think that that plant would continue operations if gas prices were sitting in the range of $2.50/gal.
The Ford plant will not close. It has very high productivity. Threats of closing are Ford's way of extracting more concessions from the state of Minnesota.
While I do agree that the workforce in this area is dependable, reliable, and hardworking (as opposed to in New Mexico where I now live - even excellent climatic conditions can't get businesses to remain here due to the poor work ethic in these here parts), but I would expect Ford and the other automakers realize their current factories are no longer feasible with today's fuel prices. It is time for Ford and GM to invest in rebuilding factories for a different today and tomorrow.
Postponing the inevitable... Ford and GM are so far removed from the current consumer preferences and demand that it will be near impossible to recover. There will be pleanty more plant closures in the works. Lets just hope they can save themselves
