Planting under a tree

When planted together, trees and flowers can compete for sun, water and minerals. Here are a few ways to get them to peacefully coexist.

There are several other forms of sedum that are low & walkable. Bugleweed/ajuga also has forms that stay quite low and take foot traffic. I've used creeping thyme and a creeping form of veronica for places that get some foot traffic. Nothing beats grasses for roughhousing, kids and dog play, but anything less than that, yes.
