DETROIT — A new winter misery index confirms what many Americans in the Midwest and East know in their all-too-chilled bones: This has been one of the harshest winters of our lifetimes.

I wonder how the winter of 78-79 rated fro Minneapolis. That one seemed quite bad in my (not always accurate) memory.

Typical ice-out dates on area lakes tend to fall in the first two weeks of April. I wouldn't be surprised if we get into May this year. (I anticipate any "dislikes" this post gets are from boat owners).

I was thinking it's been a really nice winter until this "Index" told me otherwise...Good thing Spring only four more short little months away...

chanman01..."(I anticipate any "dislikes" this post gets are from boat owners)." For sure. I usually go by Lake Harriet ice out (generally around 4/15), but I remember driving up north of Walker for fishing opener one year and Walker Bay was frozen solid. Anybody remember what year that was (mid-eighties I'm guessing)? Anyhow, I did see a clip during the Olympics on life in Siberia. Now that's harsh!

On Thursday, it's supposed to be 30 degrees Fahrenheit in North Pole, Alaska.

We must embrace the liberal logic, that any departure from the defined mean temperature, represents verification of climate change attributable to man. Climate change that has been detected before the presence of man, should not be regarded as valid once man is present.

chanman...all depends on how quickly we warm up and how much rain we get in March/April. Either way..it'll all be done by April 30th.

Bring it on! Much better than last year! We could do with about 4-5 more record snowfall events. Finally, a real winter!

Weather stories are starting to get a bit tired at this point. Let's have distractions from it, not just reinforcement. Crashed Ice was fun. Winter Carnival was fun. Snowshoeing is fun, etc.
