Trial starts on Michigan's gay-marriage ban; state defends it as 'will of the people'

DETROIT — Children need good parents, no matter their gender or sexual orientation, a psychologist testified Tuesday at a trial challenging Michigan's ban on gay marriage.

The problem for the state of Michigan is that its "star witness" will be under oath and can't lie about what his research actually found, which is that the children of divorce fare worse than the children of intact marriages. Unless, that is, he is willing to go to jail for perjury. Who knows?!

It's a false argument. The issue isn't 'gay parents vs. straight parents,' since the parents will still be the parents and they'll still be gay whether they're allowed to marry or not. The issue is 'unmarried but co-habitating parents vs. married parents' who just happen to be gay. Anyways, we don't make opposite-sex couples justify their abilities to parent when they want to get married, so why should same-sex couples have to clear that hurdle?
