If he truly wanted to be judged solely on his football skills, why did he need to say anything about his sexual orientation? No one cares if you're gay.

"why did he need to say anything about his sexual orientation?"--------Because other people were preparing to say something about it, and he decided he wanted to have control over how aspects of his life become public knowledge.

beno16 - I couldn't agree more. Why does this thing always have to be played out as a big deal? I think we are far enough along as a society that we don't need to create major highlights everytime someone comes out and declares they are gay. Get over yourself already. We don't care.

Ok so you (1) call a press conference and state your sexual orientation, and stand at the podium answering questions until the last reporter leaves the building, then (2) you respectfully decline to field any additional questions until after (a) the combine, (b) the NFL draft, and (c) you have made an NFL team after training camp.

He waits until the super bowl is over... and the post super bowl is over... then with max news opportunity comes out, all the sports channels talked about for a week was this dude. I think certain people dont want to let go of the power and privileges that comes along with being the person who is discriminated against.

Seems to me he is playing to his new found fame.

This guy is a head case and an idiot all the way. Instead of his draft stock rising because of who he has sex with, it has now fallen. Nobody cared about his sexual preference. But now we know that that is how he wants to be defined, rather than as a football player. Any team that drafts him will regret it.

It's kind of sad in this day and age that this even has to be a headline. OF COURSE he wants to be judged by the NFL on his football skills. The only question is which team(s) will actually stand up and do that.

Sam - we don't care... get over yourself... gay-is-deprived-and-denied is over and done. Gays marry, lesbians marry, anyone of the 50 FB new sexual types marry -- only radical GLTB LGBT TBGL, and haters of same, who get high on a cause care any more... When you now get picked in the 5th round, it is because NFL offices think you suck, not because bias put you there... Stop trying to stretch out the special bias chants - Hey, I actually dislike you because of your eyebrows - don't think that people don't like gay people because they are gay - they dislike some because some shove it in your face, some because they smell, some because they act superior, some because they make fun of Kleinfelters - for all the reasons people don't like people no matter their color, creed, race, or gender preference... True equality means we don't dance around your cause when we dislike you, or accept you just because in addition to being a jerk, you are gay... We just don't like you as a person. True equality. Deal with it.

While we're not caring about what people do in their personal lives, could athletes stop gathering around for prayers in midfield after a game, or stop talking about how god did this or that for them? I don't care about your religious beliefs.
