No, private attorneys let the MDHR do the heavy lifting--interviews, investigation, etc. and then come in and take their percentage of any settlement reached by the MDHR. Folks with PC determinations without attorneys get it all.

A misleading heading and article. Matos makes it *seem* like justice isn't getting served, somehow. The MDHR is probably doing wonders, given that any number of claims are often spurious and without merit, but still have to be investigated. Despite current trends to change this reality, those who FEEL they have been wronged, still have to prove it... at least for now. And yes, I'm certain that many lawyers LOVE that they can sit back while the MDHR does all the heavy lifting at taxpayer expense and then they can swoop-in like the vultures they are. We maintain this agency because ... why?

There is not enough investigators and the state statute is very narrow. The department serves no purpose except to give the illusion that we live in a more egalitarian society and is just a waste of tax payer money. Either we found it properly, get rid of the politics (the Commissioner not being picked by the Governor) and broaden the scope, and maybe something can be done. Get rid of Lindsey and bring in someone that is objective and not tied to politics and ambitions. That department also has to stop taking the stance of being an attorney for the defense and maintain a neutral stance stated in the state statutes.
