What's open and closed on Presidents' Day

Kind of like Veterans day , basicly a Gov holiday

As a Canadian, I will never understand holidays in this country. If it is a holiday, isn't it a holiday? Why are so many places open. Don't people have a need to honour those presidents, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, and so on? OR is the almighty dollar so much more important? People need a break, especially from such a dreadful winter as this. In Canada, if it is a holiday, it is a statutory holiday as deemed by the government, and paid at time and one-half, if open at all. If everyone is open on these special days, then why have such holidays in the first place? They seem to serve no purpose and that is sad.
