There was a small group of people watching an owl who had sat on a low branch in a tree in Downtown St. Paul today, next to the Travelers Insurance building. I was driving by but would like to hear from anyone who saw it up close.

If we want to continue to see predator birds such as owls, hawks and eagles we need to change the thinking and culture of many pheasant hunters who take it upon themselves to shoot every hawk and owl they see when hunting their favorite Chinese immigrant prairie bird.

It's not just here that snowy owls are being spotted. The NY Times reported that record numbers of snowy owls were being seen all over the Northeast, with some even venturing down to DC. There have also been pictures of them in Arkansas, Florida, and even Bermuda. Perhaps Canada is a little too full of snowy owls after a productive breeding season.

Marhall54: I hope this isn't true! I know lots of pheasant hunters and I never hear talk of it.

Marshall54, the hawks and owls don't belong in most of the prairie. There should not be trees or power poles for them to hunt from. We should be discouraging the hawks and owls in favor of native prairie chickens. At least it is the type of habitat that is ideal for pheasants.
