Male, female or custom? Facebook adds options for users to self-identify

MENLO PARK, Calif. — You don't have to be just male or female on Facebook anymore. The social media giant has added a customizable option with about 50 different terms people can use to identify their gender as well as three preferred pronoun choices: him, her or them.

So it seems that this field becomes meaningless - it can be used either as a joke, or as a flag to identify "bigots" who refuse to kowtow to modern flexi-think.

conservative posters on this site love to post comments about the freedom of the markets, but when Facebook decides to allow users to CHOOSE which words they use to describe their gender... I'm sorry, but when did greater freedom of expression become an act of tyranny? Facebook is free to do what they want. So are their users. If this decision results in my conservative friends deleting their account, good riddance. Fewer uncited, garbage articles and diatribe that I have to scroll through.

"They"?? They is a plural pronoun. Maybe they are making this accommodation for people with multiple personalities.

Rather than expecting these people to deal with mental and emotional impairments, we now will merely find a new way to smile and nod toward those flaws by ignoring that we are all made either male, or female.

How humbly altruistic of Facebook to do this without a single dissenter in their executive branch! And with no advertising or marketing metrics involved! Ooops, another flying monkey just escaped from my....

Aren't you XY or XX, pretty much? How about just let science decide, and not you? Let people put in any combination of X's and Y's, that should be sufficient. That way you can't have people lying about their sex (for example, saying "I feel like a woman" when they are XY).
