Rand: Is Pitino doing more with less?

The differences between this year’s Gophers men’s basketball and last year’s team are numerous, starting of course with head coach Richard Pitino taking over for the fired Tubby Smith.

Trevor Mbakwe....a HUGE difference. Rodney Williams underachieved but was a solid senior contributor.

Coaching isn't the problem with this year's team, but the lack of a physical forward like Mbakwe is. King and Osenieks get pushed around giving up offensive rebounds to the opponents. Walker and Eliason aren't dominant either. The lack of effective big people will cost them a trip to the NCAA's. Look for a late season collapse.

Bottom line - Coach Pitino's teams are more entertaining to watch. That brings more viewers, more fans and more students. Coach Pitino's is passionate - Tubby seemed bored.

"Bottom line - Coach Pitino's teams are more entertaining to watch. That brings more viewers, more fans and more students." -- And hopefully, recruits! Tubby was a good hire at the time to reestablish credibility in the the program for recruits, and he did get some decent talent, upgrading the program. However, the Gophers' very stagnant offensive style eventually became a detriment to recruiting. My hope is that Pitino's combination of name and more open, dynamic style will be the perfect blend to attract top recruits.

The difference is in coaching: under Pitino, players progress and overachieve; under Smith, players regress and underachieve.

Funwatch nailed it. Couldn't say it better myself. Who would you rather have in the Big 10? Mbakwe and Rodney Williams or Mo Walker and Osieniks? Seems clear that Pitino is indeed getting more out of less.

If Tubby would have been fired when he should have been, about 3 years ago players like Devoe Joseph, Colten Iverson, Rodney Williams just to name a few would have all excelled under Pitino I believe. Last years team for example regressed hard and most of the reason was on the poor coaching staff. Tubby shuffling players in and out every few minutes and putting players on the floor that had no business playing DI basketball or not even DII. Body language says alot and all you had to do is look at the players last year and it said they were miserable.

These guys are entertaining to watch. The stats may be very similar but the way they play are NOT. Pitino's guys don't quit. If they are behind they keep scrapping. They don't blow significant leads at the end and snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory, as happened in prior years. The only frustration is they have been so close, but that's OK in the future those games will be a 'W' Go Gophers!!!

kev5115 - I agree with you except it is probably a good thing Tubby wasn't fired 3 years ago, because Richard would probably not have been on the radar... and if Richard had not been hired by the Gophers, and had gotten more head coaching experience, he might have been on everyone's radar. Weird how timing changes things.
