U.S. fans sparse as Sochi focus shifts to athletes

SOCHI, RUSSIA – A day after Russia opened the Winter Olympics with a patriotic snapshot of its history and culture, it seemed the home country had the place mostly to itself. Thousands came to Olympic Park on a bright, springlike day to cheer on hockey players and speedskaters, watch hip-hop dancers, and take photos with the Olympic rings and cauldron.

What a poor choice for Olympic site. Oppressive society with so many human violations. Just seeing Putin on TV last night seemed...scary! People can complain all they want...this is one great country to call home!

I turned on the speedskating and some crowd moron was bleeping an air horn during the entire race. It was worse than the constant horns during the last world cup. Turned it off one minute later. BTW, it was ironically funny that the final jeopardy question yesterday was about how Medvedev gave away the presidency to Putin.

Interesting that the Olympics are billed as being at Sochi, when the ice events are actually at Adler, about 30 km south and the snow events are in the mountains above Adler, about 75 km from Sochi. More false advertising by the Russians, just like the statement that they didn't have video in the bathrooms but 'knew' that the water had been left on.

My hope is that the athletes and spectators can enjoy the experience and make it home to their families and friends. And that the IOC never, ever allows such a dismal place to host the Games ever, ever again.
