Hartman: Losing the Super Bowl is a painful, lasting memory

The last time that the Vikings reached the Super Bowl was in January 1977, when they fell to 0-4 in the NFL title game.

Vikes should have made it to the Super Bowl following the 1998 season, 15-1, that featured Randall Cunningham throwing passes to rookie Randy Moss.......and after the 2009 regular season, 12-4, led by Brett Favre....who knows if we would have won the Super Bowl one or both of those years, however.....luck and good fortune plays a role, along with talented athletes......

Nearly 40 years, but Minnesotans still act like this is a successful franchise. This franchise is barely above .500 since it last went to the Super Bowl.

Some corrections. The 1973 Dolphins were not undefeated they were 12-2. Second the Vikings did not lose to Dallas in the NFC Championship game it was the divisional round. I agree that the Dolphins, Steelers and Raiders were superior teams. I do believe however that if the 69 Chiefs and the 69 Vikings play 10 times Minnesota wins 9. The 70 game was played without Kapp at QB. BallFour I'll take 20 playoff appearances including 5 conference championship appearances as an indication of some success. Who do you root for?

Thanks, Sid. I've spent my whole adult life trying to forget the 4 Super Bowl losses. Do you have any other old wounds you'd like to open? The Twins losing the '65 World Series after being up 2-0 is a wound covered with scar tissue-care to write about that one too?

Any enthusiasm I had from the Gophers going 2-2 in that tough four game stretch has been totally squashed, both because of the struggles Wisconsin and Ohio State continue to have, and the fact the Gophers are winless since that stretch. Is this going to be another Gopher meltdown at the end of the season (ala Tubby)?

37 years since the last Viking Super Bowl appearance. The close calls just missing the big show hurt more - Dallas Hail Mary loss, Favre/New Orleans loss and 1998's never missed a FG Anderson.

Wow - how do people get out of bed in the morning, knowing 'their' football team hasn't won a Sup- sorry, that's about all the time I have to devote to thinking about that.

Mike Grant appears to be an outstanding coach, his record speaks for itself. I just wonder how successful he would have been at a less affluent school. High school athletics are not on an even playing field. Schools that were able to compete in the past are finding it much harder, because of the cost of playing. It's sad, high school sports are following the lead of college sports, and college sports are following the lead pro sports, it's all about the money not the sport.

Everything I have ever read over the past 30 years had pegged KC the underdog and that Superbowl as an upset, Leave it to Sid to always make excuses for our sports teams….

Who the hell cares about corporate athletes anymore? Get outside and do something.
