Souhan: Seahawks' Carroll learned much from Grant, but not stoicism

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Wednesday morning, before his last full-scale practice in preparation of his first Super Bowl as an NFL head coach, Pete Carroll planned for a “rockin’ Thursday.” He actually said that, making more like Dick Clark than Dick Vermeil.

Substance, not style, gets it done in the end. Ask Tim Brewster or Les Steclel

Very insightful. Nice that you could put this all together right before the Super Bowl good job Jim.

It's about time one of the Strib writers does a 'local angle' column about The Big Game.

I think Mike Zimmer is a really good hire for the Vikes, along with Norv Turner. But Carroll's success shows you don't need to be a grinding coordinator to be a successful head coach. Today's NFL requires you to be a motivator and a psychologist of sorts - be able to work with the classiest and the classless at the same time - the young and brash and the old and crafy - and be able to bridge difficult personalities for one goal - win the games. He's done that and he's an example of a guy who can work with players from all walks of life. Not everyone can do that and do it as successfully as Carroll has.

Both Seattle and Denver have lost games this year. Why does the Super Bowl champion lose 1 or more games during the year? Teams peak? Players are injured? Good players just make mistakes at critical times? Why did the vikes never win a super bowl?

I get bothered that he is being rewarded for bad behavior. He walks away from USC leaving them a mess with no repercussions whatsoever. And now the strength of his team, the defensive backfield, have all been busted for PED use under his watch.

mstthreek...I couldn't agree more. He knew exactly the mess he created at USC and left town before the hammer fell. Go Broncos!

Not much new in this column. Sid wrote about Pete Carroll and Bud Grant the middle of last November. Almost a week on the scene and nothing interesting or unique. where is the story behind the story?

So the Vikings hired Green instead of Carroll.... why is that not a surprise? Is Rybak in NY carrying Goodell's luggage this weekend?
