Woah--this is very sad. Hard to think of a worse, more counterproductive way to handle this situation--especially with ELEMENTARY aged kids. How about a functional billing system for starters?? You could even try collecting from parents that owe and helping to enroll those who qualify in a subsidy program!

What was accomplished? They threw out food, gave them fruit and beverage which I assume they won't be charged for ...... how about sending out a FINAL notice to the parents?

Who could do that to a child? The children have no control over the parent's ability to pay, yet they are punished? What if that was the only real meal of the day they get? I really can't believe they took food away from the kids and just threw it in the garbage. SHAMEFUL!

Even in MN many, many schools have 50% or more of the kids on reduced or subsidized lunch. Maybe it's time in Mn we started making lunch a part of the cost of education for every kid and requiring the legislature to provide it along with the rest of the uniform system of schools they are abidcating their responsibility to provide for.

I think I read something like this before...oh yeah, in a Dickens novel.

I agree that what this school district did was wrong. The school should have notified the parents that they need to pay or send their kids to school with lunch. I don't agree with Eleanore that lunch should be provide to every student regardless of parental income.

This isn't news. It happens in Minnesota, too. I can see why the school does it. If the child is in the hole for lunch money, and the school continues to give the kid lunch, the hole gets deeper. Parents, keep the lunch account in the black, pack a lunch, or see if you qualify for free or reduced lunch. Very simple.

For a state that prides itself on its religious background, what they did was very anti-Christian. Outside of that it was also immoral. Anything for a buck, huh?
