Sure, Blu needed the exercise. But I needed to connect with nature — even in subzero temps.

Kitty, I will be thinking of you and Blu tomorrow when my 11 1/2 year old German Shepherd nuzzles my arm at the computer and announces it is time for our morning sojourn. Even on the coldest mornings, these are precious moments. Fine tribute. Thank you for sharing it.

My yappy, neurotic 14-year-old terrier mix is down to one walk a day this winter. Yesterday and today, a short one. Putting his boots and coat and harness on took longer than the walk. In any event, your telling of Blu's story reminded me of the joys my little dog finds every day. Thank you for reminding me to share his joy.

As one who has spent the past five months without a dog for the first time in 25 years, Kitty's strength, heart and insight ring as true as always. Dogs lead us into the world and even do so after they're gone.

Aw, Kitty. So nice, and so sad. I'm so sorry about Blu.

When I take our 2 1/2 cocker (he loves the snow) for a walk tonight I will say a silent prayer for Kitty and Blu and repeat what I heard a long time ago..."Bless the beasts and singing birds, and guard with tenderness those who have no words."

Wonderful article, Ms. Kitty! A very touching piece that reminds me in my busy day that breaking free of routine to walk my two "needy" dogs, I'm also taking care of myself.

People who demean or deny the personality and love that these wonderful creatures give and receive from us are missing what the world has to offer. Beautiful tribute. As with all of our friends and loved ones who have gone on before us... Blu LIVES!!!

Beautifully written article. After my golden died several years ago, I just couldn't go walking without him. After many months, I did walk early one fall morning and cried the whole time. Good thing it was dark out. I now have a rescue dog and enjoy the walks again - even if it's cold out!
