NHL won't commit to letting its players participate in Olympics beyond Sochi Games next month

The NHL has not decided whether to let its players participate in the Olympics beyond this year, casting doubt on who will be competing for hockey gold in four years.

Ok, thumbs down this because it's pessimistic. But I want to say before it happens: there will be no hue and cry from the US if pro hockey players don't go to the Olympics next time. Why? Because the US will do poorly in Sochi. How can I make such a bold claim? Because the US has never medaled outside of North America in the Olympics since pro players started playing. In Torino 2006, the US could not even beat Latvia. Remember the fallout after Nagano? Canada fares a little better managing a silver in Lillehammer and Albertville, but that's a disgrace for a country that regards anything less than a Gold a defeat in its national sport. And after that, no one will have the excitement for the 2018 game that we did after the stunning US-Canada final last time in Vancouver. You may think this is overly simplistic and tell me I'm wrong, but the 2018 Olympics will be held in South Korea, another bad hemishpere for the North Americans. Stay home boys, we'll watch you in primetime here.
