Once again, the anti-gun tone of this site is coming through. How many college kids died of suicide, drug overdoses or alcohol poisoning in the USA today? Those don't get reported...just anything involving a gun!

America has a cancer: guns. I feel sorry for folks that live in such fear that they feel the need to pack a lethal weapon in public, or to have them close at hand in their home. How many more children and young people must die before Congress acts?

The only obvious solution is to put guns in dorms.

Fishbach - so we should have Congress eliminate cars also. They kill more people than guns do every year!

peoplewatchr: the majority of suicides are committed with guns. There's one good reason to eliminate guns. Suicide by gun makes up a good percentage (roughly half) of all firearm deaths. I've seen a suicide by gun as performed by someone who chose to make his death a public event: it was, needless to say, disturbing.

So what does a young adult getting shot in Carolina have to do with the price of tea in MN?

cartoonconn: It has nothing to do with the price of tea in Minnesota - we are witnessing a national trend that shows the world that America is a violent nation. Gun violence is a legitimate story the merits reporting. Perhaps you would prefer to have gun slaughter stories reported only if the death toll is above an acceptable limit - say ten, twenty?

Guns don't kill people, bullets do. License and tax bullets... problem solved

Fishbach---one person being shot by some criminals several states away is not news, no matter how much you think it advances your obvious anti gun ideals. Here's some news: gun crime is at a 30 year low while gun carry permits are at an all time high.

A car has a purpose completely separate from its ability to injure or kill. A gun does not. A gun that couldn't injure or kill is useless as a deterrent, much less as a weapon. A car that cannot injure or kill would be perfect. Both cars and guns are frequently operated by people who have no skill or business owning or operating either one; that's true.

As for the culpability of the person or the gun, of course it's the person's fault. A gun is an inanimate object. It doesn't do anything unless a person controls it. But the majority of suicides, killings and accidental deaths by weapon are not bludgeonings, stabbings, stranglings or defenestrations. They're done with guns. That's the problem.
