Philip Nelson’s departure doesn’t leave the cupboard bare for the Gophers at quarterback by any means.

Never mind the options. Leidner IS the QB. The sooner Kill and Limegrover realize this, the better this team will be.

It all begins at quaterback, then the lines, then the RB and the DB. Do we have the guy who can get us to a better bowl game? Well, do we?

Much like Leidner got this year, the primary backup needs some game reps. I'm not too worried about Leidner. However, Kill's offense requires mucho running from the QB. Marquies got banged up and so did Nelson. The backup will be important. Heck, look how important Leidner was. Ski-U-Mah.

As much as Leidner has been my favorite, Nelsons departure does leave an enormous void. We are essentially were we were last year with young quarterbacks. Killed needs to realize that is northern Illinois system is not going to work the same for the gophers in the Big Ten. The guys are bigger and faster in the quarterbacks will take too much of a beating. We need to be able to pass better and that will require passing more often. The running game dominated at Northern Illinois and that set up the pass for wide-open guys. It has not happened here and won't. A great coach is flexible and will modify their system, as needed, to fit the talents of the players. That needs to happen. I like coach kill and hope he is able to do the things that will move the program forward, or keep moving it forward

I am hoping and praying that Mitch is our man....I hope Philip finds his way, but this decision of his helps me understand why he looked so stiff and lackluster last season. I look forward to being at the Signing Social in early February at the Bank!!!

It all starts with the offensive line. If we build dominant offensive lines, the rest falls into place on offense. You can run on anybody. Ask Glen Mason. We need some players to emerge at wide receiver. That's our weakest spot on offense by far. Jerry knows what he's doing, he'll solve the problems.

Unless we advance some receivers, the passing game CAN'T be the focus. My worry is that now we don't have two experienced guys for the inevitable bumps bruises and (hopefully not) breaks that come with running your QBs around a lot.

I hope that Limegrover and Co. de-emphasize the quarterback in the running game this season. They were able to get away with it last year because they had two guys who had proven they can run the offense. But if Leidner goes down we may find ourselves back in the position of playing another redshirt freshman. That isn't ideal. It will be tough to win a lot of games, especially during the second half of the schedule, if we end up in that situation.

With a running QB you better have a good option at number two or look out if Liedner gets hurt.
