US appeals court rules bloggers, public have same First Amendment protection as journalists

GRANTS PASS, Ore. — A federal appeals court ruled Friday that bloggers and the public have the same First Amendment protections as journalists when sued for defamation: If the issue is of public concern, plaintiffs have to prove negligence to win damages.

Point taken. However, one's first amendment rights end when blogs become libelous. It's one thing to express one's opinion, another to say defamatory things about someone that are not true.
