Lileks: Target’s Great Data Breach finally sends us over the edge

  • Article by: JAMES LILEKS , Star Tribune

I snapped. It took a month, but fear got the best of me. When the Great Target Data Breach was announced, a lot of us took it in stride — 40 million numbers? They’ll never get around to mine. Of course, Albert A. Anderson, whose card number began with 1111, probably sweated a little, but as the weeks went by and we didn’t hear stories of massive fraud, we relaxed. That horse might be out of the barn, but it wasn’t ordering OxyContin from a Bulgarian website.

Hopefully what this will do is get people to pay for things with cash. No trail there . . . and no fees for banks and credit card companies. Did you know that you can frequently get nice discounts by paying cash?

I have been told the vigilant Fraud Department at The East Bank of the Mississippi (member FDIC) has it all in hand and will alert me the moment anything is amiss. the only time those outfits do anything is if you are on the no-phones side of Maui at a souvenir stand with some marvelous native jewelry, and your card is declined because you are not at Rosedale.

I'll bet James doesn't know that Consolidated Enterprises Inc. was a real Minneapolis company. They were a vending machine company, I think, located on 3rd & N. Washington. I knew them because they sold used jukebox records for 50 cents each or something. They moved to Lakeville or Farmington or someplace and I never heard of them again.
