I have always thought Minnesotas D1 team should be a Minnesota State at St. Cloud or Mankato. The U of M in Minneapolis cannot compete with the pro teams. I like Nanne. He shoudl have been AD twenty years ago.

All the U needs to do is recruit players that can read at a 5th grade level and we'll be in a league with the big boys. Is that what we really want?

I went to the U of Minn. Minneapolis campus and I do not understand these posts...great hockey as the U has had can compete and has in the past.....Quality sells in and of itself and that maxim will go on through eternity...I say get the standard up where it belongs, keep a quality coaching staff and AD that say school studies are #1/graduation included, keep ethics of all leaders above reproach and remember enjoy what you are doing in the balanced life each student has at the U of Minn. We should have home grown student/athletes keeping the teams at the top of the class especially in hockey mens and womens but all sports will fall into line with high standards. That is what I think the folks running the show should shoot to obtain.....But I am only a Polish doctor at this point in my existence and what do I know lol. But I know I enjoy U of Minn basket ball, football and hockey men and women as we speak and it can only get better. Go Gophers, heck I think I am going to come back and finish some more course work in the next couple of years myself lol.

I wish Lou the best, he's a great guy and if I had money, I would give it to the U. However, I think it will be difficult to raise funds and here's why: We don't care about athletics in this state!

Great article, Dennis. It's a serious challenge to compete in today's DI athletic world. It's also a challenge to be a top research university. Both things require substantial amounts of money, time, energy, and other resources. I don't know that Minnesota, as a state, has truly been willing to participate in that game/race during the last 20-30 years. The U has really done well with its institutional and academic goals that were set forth about 10 years ago, which is really promising. But it still has a ways to go in order to improve the quality and consistency of the top money-generating athletic programs. Improvements have been made but it's a long road...one that requires commitment, consistency, and a long-term plan. It's great that Lou has been willing to take on the responsibility and challenge of being the face of the U of M for athletics fundraising purposes. The state of MN has benefitted in so many ways from the U being a core component of its fabric. But it's obviously a tough sell in terms of generating financial support. Although I'm a MN native, I advise students and guide an academic program at one of the top five universities in the world. I see what institutional financial support can do to assist students, fund critical research, and build innovative opportunities for students, faculty, and the greater community. This says nothing of the opportunities for student athletes, which are beyond amazing. The U of M is such an amazing place, and I really hope its athletics programs can thrive. The university and state will reap the rewards in so many different ways.

Let's compare here: Attend the U of MN and see everyone bundled up like the younger brother in the movie A Christmas Story. OR, attend a place like ASU and see everyone having a very, very good time. Now in his 70's, Nanne must have forgotten what it was like to be in the 18 to 22 year old age group!

Three things. 1.) It is great to see an alumni SHOW their support and want to be a part of fixing the problem. I am tired of hearing other high profile alumni say they support the U of M but not show it when the university comes to them. Lou hit it dead on in this interview on so many questions. 2.) They left out one question so I will go ahead and ask it. What do you think of Joel Maturi and far back did he send us? 3.) I see someone is already using the weather card and that needs to stop. The other programs in the B1G like Michigan, MSU, and Wisconsin get the same weather we do and you don't see them whinig about it.

Athletics pay for Academics? Lou, what are you smoking and can I have some?

melbgopherJan. 15, 14 6:23 AM

I graduated in '63 and after that high point it seems like the U got stuck in neutral because of the pro sports.

Great article. Minnesotans just don't get the connection between athletics and academics and that the two are connected at the hip. Go to the Rose Bowl, and watch the donors come out of the woodwork. Training table on card tables with fold up chairs and sterno cans to keep the food hot, unreal!
