Since we happen to have cold weather every year, any chance of fixing the underlying issues as well as having a safe manuel override?

We designed it to work, the code says it will work, therefore it won't fail and we don't need any backup... from which of the engineering disciplines have I heard this a hundred times before?

Give them a break. It's government. Anyone expect they could open a gate? It is equally complicated as opening a garage door which most of us do every day.

Too bad the Lexus had to drive next to the Buick. It is an American tragedy.

Regarding the transponder fee refund... the bigger question is why is there even a transponder fee at all? Illinois Tollway Authority charges ZERO for their transponders. And they have tens of thousands of them out on the road. If you want to increase utilization in the metro, and thus increase revenue collected, the monthly fee really does not help. My guess is that the contract with the transponder vendor was poorly negotiated, leaving MNDOT in the position of having to charge a fee to meet their internal projected cost targets. Not a surprise.

MNDOT is so sad. Everything with them and gov't in general has to be more complicated. Just remove the arms until summer! Geez. Let the traffic flow!

"Up in arms" over a stuck gate? Only in America, and usually the wealthy, who expect everything to be perfect for their perfect lives (they PAID for it, don't you know). And of course, the boot-lickers from the teaparty are all over this, blaming "government" for inconveniencing those objects of their worship.

" Just remove the arms until summer! Geez. Let the traffic flow!" Yeah, like that won't cause any problems.

whine, whine, whine. then whine again when you have to pay taxes. but be sure to shout with glee when your taxes are cut and so is the states budget. not to mention the federal budget. no one wants to pay taxes but they sure do want everything to run like greased lightening when they need it.
