In Anoka County, predawn coffee at commissioner's gas station has enduring appeal

Anoka County Commissioner Scott Schulte owns the gathering place — his service station — but he’s just one of the guys who have shared coffee and camaraderie there for 50-plus years.

My dad and "Mel" were friends I think, back in the day when our family still lived in Coon Rapids. After my parents got divorced, if my Mom ever had car trouble, he'd tell her "take it to Mel". Although I don't recall Mel as being the friendliest guy in the world, and had argued with my Mom on a few occasions, like when our car battery died at Northtown late one night. Anyway, how that service station stays alive with no gas pumps in a dying part of town is an absolute miracle.
