Lindsey Vonn says she won't compete at Sochi

  • Article by: RACHEL BLOUNT , Star Tribune

When Lindsey Vonn made a promotional visit to Afton Alps last fall, the Burnsville native was presented with a giant card signed by hundreds of people who had come to see her. The Olympic champion in downhill skiing had just returned to the slopes after a serious knee injury, and among the messages of support and luck, one wary person wrote: Don’t get hurt.

What can she do now for publicity?

That's too bad.

Vonn will have to stand in the front row at some of Tigers PGA events to get publicity. Tiger sure wasn't going to skip a warm climate tournament to stand in the cold on some Russian mountain side in the wind chill. Makes you wonder if part of her decision was to sooth the relationship.

People, many athletes are "publicity hungry," yet can't we be more empathic to Vonn's situation? She's worked very, very hard to attain her level of excellence. As she says, it's "devastating" not to be able to exhibit that talent at the Olympics. She's assessed her reality and has already set new goals. Perhaps we could admire that and not spew such petty commentary.

I'm sure to lay awake tonight after this...

I see a lot of envy in these comments. Take stock, folks, it's one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Be well, and prosper, Lindsey.

80mph down icy slope? On weak knee?

Rest assured, NBC will hire Vonn as an Olympics "reporter" and work her like a rented mule to drive the ratings it badly needs to recoup the $775 million it paid for airing rights to the Winter Games. (Lead announcer: "Let's go now to Lindsey Vonn to get the lowdown on the Greco-Roman halfpipe curling slalom competition...")

I applaud her for stepping aside and allowing a healthy skier take her place on the U.S. team.

She will be replaced by Barack Obama who will win the gold because no one can take a country downhill faster.
