Someone accidentally drops a flash drive and they have to make an emergency landing? How is a flash drive dangerous?? This is ridiculous.

A flash drive? C'mon, probably had someone's soup recipe on it.

I hope nobody drops a paperclip in the aisle.

I'm going to have to assume this is one of the bigger flash drives, because if they did this for a tiny flash drive the size of my thumb, well, that's just very silly.

It's official. We're now screaming at our own reflections in the mirror.

Very easy to second guess a decision such as this. The aircraft and its passengers are safely on the ground which is the goal in every flight ever taken. Sort out what happened then and let the chips fall where they may. Never the wrong decision IMHO and very few passengers would ever fault a crew "erring" on the side of caution. You say it was ridiculous, I say it was prudent.

Now they are saying it was a camera disguised as a flash drive. Gross and suspicious yes but not exactly a bomb or anything that resembles a bomb.

I realize it is better to err on the side of safety. HOWEVER, the definition of suspicious: 'causing a feeling that something is wrong or that someone is behaving wrongly : causing suspicion'. If it is recognized as a flash drive, then how can it be suspicious. A flash drive is a device that contains flash memory and is used for storing data or transferring it to or from a computer, digital camera, etc'. Please don't drop your shoe horn in the plane, especially the old metal type. Just think what kind of 'suspicion' that would arouse. A pencil or pen is probably a more dangerous object as I may assault someone with it and poke them in the eye.

Thanks for letting the rest of us "rubes" know what a flash drive is... Cluke2: "If it is recognized as a flash drive, then how can it be suspicious?" Good question. YOU knew it was recognized as a flash drive somehow. Do you fly much?? As I said, very easy to sit at your computer and second-guess a decision that was likely made with very little additional info other than that some type of electronic device of unknown function was found left behind in a bathroom. You do know that the PanAm 747 at Lockerbie was taken down by a portable "radio", don't you?

THE TERRORISTS HAVE WON! Americans are now so paranoid we panic and over react to something as innocuous as a flash drive. Forget worries of bombs, weapons or liquids on commercial aircraft. A simple flash drive will now divert or interrupt air service. Terrorists now control us without violence or overt threats but by the mere placement of common items in common areas.
