Few rites of passage are more frightening to parents than handing over car keys to a teen driver. But handing over car keys during Minnesota’s mean winter months sure makes my shortlist.

My grandkids are now starting to drive and that gives me the quivers. I know that if they pick me up in their car, I will be the foot stomping fool in the front seat.

After I got my DL when I turned 16 (passed the behind-the-wheel in a snowstorm) Mom n Dad didn't let me drive alone for six months. Lots of practice in empty parking lots, skidding, sliding, extremely helpful and taught a healthy sense of respect for icy/wintery driving conditions. Every new driver should take these kinds of courses.

Cemeteries and parking lots are a good place to practice drive.

take them out driving on an ice road. pick a lake with good, thick ice. It's a good place for showing them how to steer out of a skid, how to stop and start on ice. this way, if they hit ice on a roadway, they wont panic. they will have experienced it before. Overcorrecting and hammering the brakes are the most common mistakes

Yep, when they had their permits I took both my kids to a big empty un-plowed parking lot and had them intentionally put the car into spins and slides, and then taught them how to recover. I wish there was a way to require a winter driving skills test for people to drive her in MN but that will never happen. Driving is a "right" in the US, not a privilege." Very different in Europe.
