Dear Amy: My husband and I play in a band. My mother-in-law takes care of our kids (2 and 6) for some of our show nights.

My mom-in-law, whom I love dearly, wanted to provide daycare for our first-born. I saw nothing but disaster on the horizon and declined as politely as I could. Get a Nanny or daycare provider. You'll sleep better, and everybody will be happier.

When a young married man is looking at that "hottie" and considering an affair, his marriage seems of no consequence because first, he thinks he can get away with it, and second, his wife can be easily replaced. He simply can't envision himself as old and unwanted some day. But when that man gets old, as we all do, the "river doesn't seem to stop here anymore." That pitiful lonely old guy with bad breath did it to himself.

This isn't so much about babysitting as it is about being able to afford your musician lifstyle. Because if you can't afford childcare-- you really can't afford to play in your band every weekend anymore. As it stands, staying out all hours of the night, you are no better than the "party animal" SIL. It's time to stay home and raise the children you created.
