Efforts to get young invincibles to sign up for health insurance ramp up-but are they working?

MIAMI — The so-called "young invincibles," are so important to the success of the Affordable Care Act that supporters and detractors are spending millions to reach them with racy ads, social media campaigns and celebrity endorsements.

Health care insurance for the young invincibles is like car insurance. You don't need it until you need it. And then you often REALLY need it. Working in the health care professions, I've seen many seriously ill young invincibles who can be financially ruined. They didn't see it coming, but people rarely do. We require people to have insurance to drive. In my opinion, they need heal care insurance for themselves, not just to make the system work.

If you cared about the young you would urge them to buy a plan covering catastrophic health risks, not to prepay the bloated medical costs of the old and sick. This law is demanding money from the young that is needed for car payments, student loan repayments, household formation. Damn these baby boomers who are conscripting the young.
