Souhan: Patterson's skills blow roof off Dome

  • Article by: JIM SOUHAN , Star Tribune

The Vikings didn’t need to show any sepia-toned highlights to pay homage to their Metrodome heritage. All they had to do on Sunday, in the last game ever played beneath the Teflon sky, was give the ball to a guy with Randy Moss’ number and Percy Harvin’s moves, then watch one of the most talented athletes in franchise history blow the roof off the joint.

Cordarrelle may be better at this stage of his career than Percy Harvin was his rookie year. Much better attitude and not injury prone either. Only downside of electric Patterson is Spielman may hold on to his job.

Good piece Jim, I have enjoyed your columns all year, and agree with you more often than not. Not playing Patterson can be high on the list of reasons why Les and his coaches have to go. Goodbye to a horrible season.

Best moment of the game, courtesy of #84: hugging the referee after the TD. Love this guy's talent, but even more - his unbridled exuberance and enthusiasm for the game. Harvin didn't display that!

84 has that 'it' factor. Amazing balance strength, speed and genuinely loves playing the game. I hope the next coaches don't try to corral Cordarrelle.

Great article Jim. Frazier has to go because as the Head Coach he is responsible for everything that's associated with putting together the best product on the field. Failure not to play C. Patterson at the beginning of the season along with his dying message that Ponder gives us the best chance at winning is inexcusable. Frazier is a nice guy and all but clearly does not know how to put the product on the field.

The reason coach is hanging by a thread he did not play the best, period. Cassel is better than Ponder and so on. To much old school thinking.

So fun to watch Corrdarrelle. Anyone with the guts to take #84 has confidence and is not afraid take resposibility. Thank you Seattle!

Hindsight is 20-20. He had one year of college ball and was raw. No one on this board knows what he lacked on running routes or the skills needed to start the season. they used him right away as a kick returner and eased him in. It worked. The good news is that Patterson is not done growing into his position. He has the potential to be one of the best. Bud Grant rarely allowed rookies into games. It is so easy to be a Monday morning quarterback and there are a lot of them posting on this site,

Musgrave, or whoever made several of the horrendous decisions about on the field personel, should be fired for deprivint the fans, team and organization of a season that should have produced a fight for a playoff spot. There is plenty of talent on the Viking offensive roster. The only thing I can think of is that Patterson is prone to drops, especially in critical 3rd down and goal line situations. The upside was so huge, the decision to not play him is simply unexplainable and not defendable.

Don't be so quick to judge Lesley. I have a feeling a lot of the QB decisions weren't his alone. Even if they were, he was given a tough situation not having a clear cut good QB.
