Souhan: Twins, not Vikings, mastered Dome's quirks

  • Article by: JIM SOUHAN , Star Tribune

If the Vikings wanted to honor the best of the Metrodome, they would invite Dan Gladden to throw out the last first pitch, and Kent Hrbek to throw out the last belch.

Seems to me that you've forgotten the everyday shortstop of the 87 and 91 Twins, unless Greg Gagne has passed away.

Oh yeah. Gagne. But Guppy already mentioned him too.

Greg Gagne! The best SS the twins have had in awhile. according to Wikipedia Gagne is still with us, thats good. as Hrbek once said "Gagne's may not the best hitter, but in the World Series he turns into Babe Ruth."

Souhan shouldn't be allowed to try to write a fluff piece. He kind of lacks sincerity. Nevertheless the Dome had great sight lines for football, it's intended occupant. A little less for baseball. Overall the Dome served its purpose and was the first with luxury boxes which are now a must in EVERY stadium for the giant revenue it brings in. Say what you want about the dome but it more than served its purpose and if not for greed would last another 30 years.

It is always funny how the Dome was so badly maligned because of the baggy and turf, but other parks like Fenway with its wall and short right field pole were treated with reverence. Every park has their quirks.

Former Viking GM Mike Lynn deserves to be mentioned for his deal that brought him 10 percent of the suite revenue from all Metrodome events over the life of the building, reaping a financial windfall for decades even after he left the team. He will always be remembered for making the Herschel Walker trade which he thought would give us a Super Bowl win but instead set the team back a decade. The dome will be missed next year when they play this game outside where it is currently 23 degrees below zero counting the wind chill.

Souhan's right about the Twins, of course. However, I still remember my first thought when I saw the field for the first time. "Is this some kind of joke?" It was. Good riddance, Dome.
