What a terribly sad story. I have a brother-in-law with pretty severe autism who lives in a group home, and I've known a number of people who work in group homes. This is everyone's worst nightmare. Even with more than 1 staff person per resident, this can happen. Look away for a second--if only to read a medication label--and a person will be gone, or take a swig off a bottle of cleaning fluid, or fall, or whatever else. For some of our severely disabled fellow Americans, it's like watching a toddler who is non-verbal, 6' tall, weighing 200 pounds, and mentally ill. The disabilities and behaviors are like snowflakes; no two the same, whether it's a condition from birth or late-onset issues, or injury.

My heart goes out to this man's family, and to the staff who took care of him.

In Heaven, he will be a mental giant. Sorry for your loss.
