Late score gives Syracuse a 21-17 Texas Bowl victory over Gophers

A 70-yard return and a TD scramble with just over one minute left allowed Syracuse to spoil the Gophers’ late rally.

Passing got the Gophers the lead. After the Syracuse missed field goal they gave up the pass and tried to run out the clock. Didn’t work. I hate it when teams do that. And if you were watching closely, a Syracuse lineman had a handful of maroon jersey on that last touchdown.

The next time our bowl game offer involves Texas, we should decline the offer.

Jerry Kill has NEVER won a game when trailing at halftime. zero and 21. REPEAT...ZERO WINS, 21 LOSSES when trailing at halftime. Wow, what great in game coaching adjustments he is making. Glen Mason got fired for basically the same type of bowl game debacle. You can drink the Jerry Kill koolaid, but he needs to do a lot more than just get us to a lousy bowl game. Try winning at least one game when trailing at half time.

Somebody remind me......did we beat a decent team this year? And don't say Nebraska, they are brutal.

I guess Kill was on the sidelines in this one. This Bowl system is a joke. Just reward the champions of every major division ONLY with playoff berths. Have a playoff bracket system. THere should be no points for second place.

I mentioned to my son on Syracuse's last touchdown that the Gophs needed to have a linebacker "spy" on their QB---that him running was the only way they could score. Instead we sent everyone and lost containment. Still, a decent season, and the last quarter shows what the team is capable of if they get just decent QB play. Get some more speed on offense!

Bad loss to a below-average team, but this team is still learning how to win "big" games (I guess the Heart of Texas bowl qualifies as a big game for the program). One takeaway from this season that has me hopeful is the performance of our defense. It's been a decade (or longer) since I've seen us play real defense against any conference power, and we stopped Nebraska, Wisconsin and Michigan State. Hageman will be a big loss, but if we can pick up next season where we left off this season, 9 wins is a real possibility. Great season guys, Go Gophers!
